2 Samuel 17 continues the narrative of the conflict between King David and his son Absalom. In this chapter, Ahithophel, one of David's advisors, offers counsel to Absalom regarding the best course of action to defeat David and his loyal followers. Ahithophel advises Absalom to pursue David immediately and kill him while he is vulnerable, which would give Absalom a greater chance of success.
Absalom also seeks advice from Hushai, another one of David's trusted friends, who deliberately gives Absalom misleading counsel to buy David more time to prepare. Hushai suggests that Absalom gathers a large army and personally leads the attack, giving the impression of strength and intimidating David's forces.
Absalom ultimately decides to follow Hushai's advice over Ahithophel's. This decision is believed to be a result of divine intervention, as God had turned Ahithophel's counsel into foolishness to fulfill His purpose.
This chapter sets the stage for the upcoming battle between David's loyal forces and Absalom's rebellious army. It highlights the strategic decisions made by both sides and the importance of wise counsel in times of conflict.
