1 Chronicles 27:20

Posted on 18 May at 11:31

“Of the children of Ephraim, Hoshea the son of Azaziah: of the half tribe of Manasseh, Joel the son of Pedaiah”

Context:To understand the verse better, we need to look at the broader context of the book of 1 Chronicles. This book is part of the Old Testament and provides a historical account of the genealogies, reigns, and activities of the kings of Israel. It emphasises the importance of worship, the priesthood, and the establishment of the Davidic dynasty.

Tribes of Israel:The verse mentions two tribes of Israel – Ephraim and the half tribe of Manasseh. These tribes were descendants of Joseph, one of the twelve sons of Jacob (Israel). Ephraim and Manasseh were Joseph’s sons, born to him in Egypt.

Leaders:The verse introduces two individuals who were leaders or captains in their respective tribes. Hoshea, the son of Azaziah, is mentioned as a leader from the tribe of Ephraim. Joel, the son of Pedaiah, is mentioned as a leader from the half tribe of Manasseh.

Significance:The mention of these leaders indicates the organisational structure and administration within the tribes of Ephraim and Manasseh. This chapter (1 Chronicles 27) provides a detailed account of various leaders, each responsible for overseeing different aspects of Israel’s affairs, such as military divisions, agricultural production, and administrative duties.
