2 Chronicles 2:16

And we will cut wood out of Lebanon, as much as thou shalt need: and we will bring it to thee in floats by sea to Joppa; and thou shalt carry it up to Jerusalem.

2 Chronicles 2:16 (KJV)

This verse belongs to Solomon’s preparation for building the temple of the Lord in Jerusalem. He had asked Hiram, king of Tyre, for skilled workers and materials. Here, Solomon’s servants promise to cut wood from Lebanon and deliver it to Joppa, from where it would be carried up to Jerusalem.

Lebanon was famous for its high-quality cedar and fir timber, valued for durability, fragrance, and resistance to decay. The wood was transported by sea as rafts, called “floats,” to the port of Joppa on the Mediterranean coast. From Joppa, the timber was carried inland and uphill to Jerusalem, where the temple would stand. This logistical detail shows the cooperative effort and careful planning involved in building the temple.

This careful planning fulfilled God’s promise to David that his son Solomon would build the temple (1 Chronicles 22:9-10). The use of Joppa also appears later in the story of Jonah, but here its main role is as the delivery point for the temple timber. The verse highlights the provision of materials for a holy purpose and the cooperation between nations.

The logistics show the value of careful organization and cooperation in God’s work. Solomon and Hiram worked together, each contributing what they could. This reminds us that serving God often requires practical planning and teamwork, not just spiritual desire. We can learn to use our skills and resources in the tasks God gives us.

The finest cedar was offered for the temple, reflecting the principle of giving God our best. The effort of cutting, floating, and carrying the wood shows the dedication required to honor God. We can ask ourselves whether we bring our best efforts and resources to the work God has given us. Let us consider how we can support God’s work with both our hearts and our hands.
