2 Chronicles 20:32
And he walked in the way of Asa his father, and departed not from it, doing that which was right in the sight of the Lord.
2 Chronicles 20:32 (KJV)
Context
This verse is part of the historical account of Jehoshaphat, the fourth king of Judah. He reigned for 25 years and is remembered as a king who sought the Lord and led his people in righteousness. In the preceding verses (2 Chronicles 20:1-30), Jehoshaphat faced a great military threat from a vast alliance of Moabites, Ammonites, and Meunites. He sought God’s guidance, and the Lord delivered a miraculous victory to Judah without them having to fight.
Meaning
Jehoshaphat is commended for following the example of his father Asa, who was also a righteous king and did what was right in the eyes of the Lord (2 Chronicles 14:2). The phrase “walked in the way of Asa his father” highlights the importance of generational faithfulness and how children can continue the godly legacy of their parents. The verse also emphasizes that Jehoshaphat “departed not from it,” indicating his steadfastness and consistency in doing what was right. The phrase “doing that which was right in the sight of the Lord” underscores that his actions were evaluated by God’s standard, not by human opinion. This is a key theme in 2 Chronicles, which focuses on the obedience or disobedience of the kings of Judah to God’s commands.
Biblical connections
The verse’s structure parallels other commendations of righteous kings, such as 2 Chronicles 34:2 regarding Josiah, who “did what was right in the eyes of the Lord and followed the ways of his father David, not turning aside to the right or to the left.” This connection shows a pattern of faithful kings being praised for following the godly example of their predecessors.
Application
Jehoshaphat was influenced by the righteous example set by his father, Asa. This highlights the importance of godly role models in our lives. Surrounding ourselves with people who walk in the ways of the Lord can inspire and encourage us to pursue righteousness. Jehoshaphat did not depart from the righteous path set by his father. He remained steadfast in his commitment to God and His commands. Similarly, we should strive to maintain consistency in our obedience to God, not wavering in our faith even in the face of challenges or opposition. Jehoshaphat’s desire was to do what was right in the sight of the Lord. As believers, our ultimate aim should be to please God with our actions and live in accordance with His will. This requires seeking His guidance, studying His Word, and aligning our lives with His principles.
Reflection
This verse encourages believers to evaluate their choices, actions, and attitudes, and align them with God’s Word, reminding us of the importance of personal devotion and integrity, irrespective of prevailing cultural norms or pressures.
