2 Chronicles 31:5
And as soon as the commandment came abroad, the children of Israel brought in abundance the firstfruits of corn, wine, and oil, and honey, and of all the increase of the field; and the tithe of all things brought they in abundantly.
2 Chronicles 31:5 (KJV)
Context
This verse belongs to the account of King Hezekiah’s reign in Judah. Hezekiah was a righteous king who worked to restore true worship and obedience to God. In the previous verse, he commanded the people of Jerusalem to give the portion due to the priests and Levites, so that these servants could devote themselves to the Law of the LORD. Here, the people respond at once and with great generosity. Their response was not slow or reluctant. As soon as the commandment went out, they brought their gifts in abundance.
Meaning
The firstfruits were the first and best part of the harvest, offered to God as an act of worship and as a confession that every blessing comes from Him. By bringing the firstfruits of corn, wine, oil, and honey, the people gave what was most valuable to them. The tithe, a tenth of all their produce, was set apart to support the priests and Levites who served in the temple. The verse stresses that the people brought these gifts in abundance and with eagerness, not reluctantly. Their giving reflected a spirit of gratitude and devotion. They recognized that all they had came from God, and they responded with open hearts.
Biblical connections
This event is part of Hezekiah’s wider reforms, which included removing idols and restoring the temple services. The people’s generous response shows that true revival involves both the heart and the material support of God’s work. The following verses describe the tithes being piled in heaps from the third month to the seventh month, showing how richly God blessed their obedience. This abundance was not accidental. It came from a collective commitment to worship and a clear recognition of God’s provision. When leadership calls for obedience to God’s commands, a faithful people respond with generosity and joy.
Application
Gratitude and trust: Giving our first and best to God shows that we trust Him to provide for our needs. It is a practical way of acknowledging that everything we have comes from Him.
Generosity: The Israelites gave abundantly and joyfully. Our giving should not be grudging or minimal, but cheerful and willing to support the work of God’s kingdom.
Faithful stewardship: While the New Testament does not require a strict tithe, it encourages believers to give sacrificially and cheerfully. We are called to manage wisely the resources God has entrusted to us.
Obedience: Hezekiah’s command called for obedience, and the people responded. As followers of Christ, we are to obey God’s commands, including giving to support His work and the needs of others.
Reflection
This passage challenges us to examine our own giving. Do we offer God our leftovers, or do we give Him our first and best? The people’s immediate and abundant response was a sign of their love for God and their commitment to His house. When we give with a willing heart, we join in the joy of worship and help sustain the work of the Lord. Let us learn from their example and respond to God’s call with eagerness and trust.
