Psalms 1:2

But his delight is in the law of the Lord; and in his law doth he meditate day and night.

Psalms 1:2 (KJV)

Psalm 1 opens the book of Psalms by contrasting the righteous with the wicked. The righteous person is blessed because he turns away from sinful influences and instead finds joy in God’s law. This verse describes the heart and habit of such a person.

The word “delight” means more than duty. The righteous person loves God’s instructions and takes pleasure in them, unlike the way of the wicked described in verse 1. “The law of the Lord” refers to God’s teachings and commandments, especially the Torah, the first five books of the Old Testament. This law is not a burden but a treasure.

Meditation here is not emptying the mind. It is thoughtful reflection on God’s Word, considering its meaning and how to apply it. “Day and night” shows that this is not a casual habit but a constant, deliberate practice. The righteous person’s thoughts return to Scripture throughout daily life.

This verse prepares for the next one, Psalm 1:3, which compares the righteous to a tree planted by water, fruitful and stable. The delight and meditation described here are the roots of that fruitfulness. Joshua 1:8 gives a similar command to meditate on God’s law so that the believer may act wisely.

Delighting in God’s law begins with reading Scripture regularly and asking what it reveals about God. Meditation can be practiced by memorizing a verse and thinking about it during the day. This habit shapes decisions and guards the heart against worldly temptations.

True happiness is not found in following the crowd but in a joyful, ongoing relationship with God’s Word. When the law becomes a source of delight, obedience flows from love rather than fear. This verse invites every believer to make Scripture a constant companion, allowing it to transform thoughts and actions. Such delight and meditation are marks of a life oriented toward God, forming the foundation for the fruitfulness and stability described in Psalm 1:3.
