Psalms 8:5

For thou hast made him a little lower than the angels, and hast crowned him with glory and honour.

Psalms 8:5 (KJV)

Psalm 8 is a hymn of praise written by King David. He looks at the night sky and wonders why the great Creator cares for human beings. In verse 4 he asks, “What is man, that thou art mindful of him?” Verse 5 answers that question. God has made humanity “a little lower than the angels” and has crowned them with “glory and honour.”

The Hebrew word translated “angels” is Elohim, which usually means “God.” Some versions render it “a little lower than God” or “a little lower than heavenly beings.” The KJV follows the ancient Greek translation and the New Testament quotation in Hebrews 2:7. Either way, the verse teaches that humans hold a special place in creation. They are not divine, but they are above the animals and near to God.

God created human beings in His own image and gave them unique abilities. This verse does not say that people are perfect or sinless. It describes the original dignity and honour that God gave to them. Being crowned with “glory and honour” means that God has placed authority and responsibility on humanity. They are to reflect His character and care for the world He made.

The New Testament applies this psalm to Jesus Christ. Hebrews 2:5-9 explains that Jesus was made “a little lower than the angels” when He became a man and suffered death. Then He was crowned with glory and honour because of His sacrifice. So the psalm has two meanings. It speaks of the dignity of every person, and it points to Christ, who restores what was lost through sin.

This verse calls us to live with humility and gratitude. We did not earn our high position; God gave it freely. Because every person bears God’s image, each one has worth and deserves respect. We honour God when we treat others with kindness and when we use our abilities to serve Him.

God has crowned us with glory and honour, yet we often forget who we are. Take time to thank Him for making you in His image. Ask Him to help you live in a way that reflects His glory and fulfils the purpose He has given you.
