Psalms 8:6
“Thou madest him to have dominion over the works of thy hands; thou hast put all things under his feet”
Context:Psalms 8 is a poetic psalm attributed to King David. It is a hymn of praise to God for His greatness and for His special care for humanity. The psalm highlights the majesty of God’s creation and the unique position of human beings in that creation.
God’s Creation:The verse acknowledges God as the Creator of all things. It reveals that God made humanity to have dominion over the works of His hands. This signifies the special authority and responsibility given to human beings in the created order.
Stewardship:The concept of dominion in this verse does not imply exploitation or abuse of the earth or its creatures. Rather, it speaks of stewardship, indicating that human beings are entrusted with the responsibility to care for and manage God’s creation wisely and responsibly.
Imago Dei:The verse echoes the biblical concept of humans being created in the image of God (Genesis 1:26-27). Being made in God’s image grants humanity a unique status among all of God’s creation. It further emphasizes the dignity, value, and worth of every human being.
Jesus and Humanity’s Dominion:This verse finds its ultimate fulfilment in Jesus Christ, the Son of God, who became fully human. In the New Testament, the apostle Paul references this verse in relation to Jesus, highlighting His ultimate authority and reign over all creation (1 Corinthians 15:27; Ephesians 1:22). As believers in Christ, we share in His victory and authority.
Responsibility and Accountability:With dominion comes responsibility. God entrusts us with the task of caring for His creation, including the environment, other living beings, and fellow human beings. Our exercise of dominion should reflect God’s love, justice, and wisdom. We will be held accountable for how we fulfil this responsibility.
Humility and Worship:Reflecting on God’s creation and the privilege of our role within it should evoke a sense of awe, humility, and worship. The psalmist marvels at the expanse of the heavens and the vastness of God’s creation (Psalms 8:3-4). It reminds us of our smallness in comparison to the vastness of God’s creation, leading us to worship Him with reverence and gratitude.
