Psalms 17:15
As for me, I will behold thy face in righteousness: I shall be satisfied, when I awake, with thy likeness.
Psalms 17:15 (KJV)
Context
Psalm 17 is a prayer of David, who pleads with God for protection from enemies and deliverance from unjust accusations. In the verses just before this one, David describes the prosperity and arrogance of the wicked. Here he turns his attention away from them and declares his own hope in God.
Meaning
David begins with the words “As for me,” showing a deliberate contrast. While the wicked trust in earthly gain, David chooses a different path. He says, “I will behold thy face in righteousness.” In ancient Hebrew culture, the face of a person represented their presence and character. To behold God’s face means to enjoy an intimate relationship with Him. David understands that this closeness is possible only through righteousness, that is, through living in a way that is right and pleasing to God.
The phrase “I shall be satisfied, when I awake, with thy likeness” carries a dual meaning. On one level, it expresses David’s confidence that each new day will bring God’s provision and contentment. On a deeper level, it points to the hope of resurrection. David anticipates an awakening when he will be fully satisfied in God’s presence, transformed into the likeness of God. True fulfillment, he knows, is not found in earthly wealth or success but in becoming like God and reflecting His character.
Biblical connections
This verse connects to the New Testament promise that believers will one day be conformed to the image of Christ. The apostle Paul writes in Romans 8:29 that God predestined believers to be conformed to the likeness of His Son. David’s hope of waking in God’s likeness finds its fullest expression in the resurrection, when God’s people will see Him as He is and be made like Him.
Application
David’s example teaches us to make our relationship with God the highest priority. Even when we face difficulties or see others prospering in ungodly ways, we can choose to seek God’s face through righteous living. This means aligning our daily choices with God’s commands and trusting that He will satisfy our deepest needs. We can wake each morning with the confidence that God is with us and that our ultimate hope rests in Him.
Reflection
Consider what truly satisfies you. David found his satisfaction not in possessions or circumstances but in the presence of God. As you meditate on this verse, ask yourself whether your heart longs for God’s likeness above all else. Let this verse renew your hope in the resurrection, when you will awake and be fully satisfied in Him.
