Psalms 14:5

Listen to this article

“There were they in great fear: for God is in the generation of the righteous.”

Context:Psalm 14 is attributed to King David and is a lament about the widespread corruption and wickedness in the world. In the preceding verses, David describes the foolishness and depravity of those who deny the existence of God and engage in wicked acts.

  • Great Fear:The verse begins by stating, “There were they in great fear.” This refers to the evildoers mentioned in the previous verses. Despite their arrogance and cruelty, they experience fear and trembling. This fear arises when they encounter the presence of God or witness His judgment.
  • God is in the generation of the righteous:The verse continues by declaring, “for God is in the generation of the righteous.” This phrase highlights the contrasting nature between the wicked and the righteous. While the wicked live in fear, the righteous can find comfort and confidence in knowing that God is with them.
  • God’s Presence:The mention of God being “in the generation of the righteous” emphasizes His intimate presence and involvement in the lives of those who follow Him. It signifies that God is actively present and engaged in the affairs of His people. This awareness brings assurance, hope, and security to the righteous.
  • The Righteous:The term “generation of the righteous” refers to those who are righteous and godly in their conduct and character. They are the ones who seek to live according to God’s Word and follow His ways. The righteous find refuge in God and experience His blessings, guidance, and protection.
