Psalms 51:5

“Behold, I was shapen in iniquity, and in sin did my mother conceive me.”

Psalm 51:5 (KJV) says: “Behold, I was shapen in iniquity, and in sin did my mother conceive me.”

Context: Psalm 51 is attributed to King David and is often referred to as his prayer of repentance after his sin with Bathsheba. This psalm is a deeply personal expression of David’s remorse and desire for forgiveness from God. In verse 5, David acknowledges his sinful nature and the fact that sin has been a part of his life from the moment of conception.

Acknowledgment of Inherited Sin: David’s words in this verse highlight the biblical understanding that all human beings are born with a sinful nature. It recognises the reality that sin entered the world through Adam and Eve’s disobedience in the Garden of Eden (Genesis 3), and as a result, every person is born with a natural inclination towards sin.

Theological Interpretations: a. Original Sin: This verse aligns with the concept of original sin, which suggests that all humans inherit a sinful nature from Adam and Eve. It emphasises the fallen state of humanity and the need for redemption and salvation through Jesus Christ.

b. Human Depravity: David’s confession underscores the biblical teaching on human depravity. It acknowledges that even from conception, there is a tendency within every individual to turn away from God and engage in sinful behaviour.

• Jesus Christ and Redemption: While Psalm 51:5 acknowledges the reality of sin, it is important to note that the verse does not provide the full picture of God’s plan for redemption. The ultimate solution to the problem of sin comes through Jesus Christ. Through His sacrificial death and resurrection, Jesus offers forgiveness, cleansing, and a new nature to those who place their faith in Him.
