Psalms 67:4
O let the nations be glad and sing for joy: for thou shalt judge the people righteously, and govern the nations upon earth. Selah.
Psalms 67:4 (KJV)
Context
Psalm 67 is a song of thanksgiving and a prayer for God’s blessing upon His people. It opens with a request for divine favor and moves toward a vision of universal praise. The psalmist’s plea, “Let the nations be glad and sing for joy,” expresses a deep gladness that comes not from changing circumstances but from the presence of God Himself.
Meaning
Joy and gladness are shown as the proper response to God’s gracious provision. True joy is rooted in God’s character and blessings, not in temporary human conditions. This joyful response is meant to echo through every nation, inviting a worldwide chorus of gratitude.
The verse also affirms God’s righteous judgment: “for thou shalt judge the people righteously.” The psalmist is confident that God, as the ultimate judge, will administer justice fairly and hold every person accountable. This assurance of divine justice strengthens the believer’s trust in God’s moral governance.
In addition, the psalmist declares that God “govern[s] the nations upon earth.” This shows God’s sovereign involvement in the affairs of nations, revealing that His concern extends beyond individual lives to the whole course of human history. His governance brings blessing and order.
The word “Selah” at the end signals a pause for reflection on these truths: joy, righteous judgment, and divine governance.
Biblical connections
This verse anticipates a time when God’s saving work and righteous judgment will be known among all peoples. The New Testament shows this being fulfilled as the Gospel goes to the Gentiles, and nations rejoice and glorify God (Acts 13:47-48). God’s righteous judgment here is not mainly the final judgment, but His just rule in history, which is cause for celebration.
Application
For believers today, this passage reminds us to place our joy in God’s presence, to trust in His just rulership, and to proclaim His goodness among all peoples. As we experience God’s blessings, we are called to join in worship and invite others to share in the celebration of a righteous and sovereign God who brings joy to the whole world.
Reflection
God’s righteous governance is a source of joy for all peoples. This truth encourages believers to long for and take part in the spread of God’s saving knowledge to every nation.
