Psalms 68:11

The Lord gave the word: great was the company of those that published it.

Psalms 68:11 (KJV)

Psalm 68 is a song of triumph, often linked to King David and a military victory. It celebrates God as a powerful warrior who leads His people, provides for them, and defeats their enemies. This verse sits within that celebration, showing that after God speaks, many people respond by spreading His message. The psalm as a whole portrays God as both deliverer and provider, and this verse highlights the role of messengers in declaring His deeds.

“The Lord gave the word” means that God is the source of the message. He speaks, and His word carries authority and power. The “company of those that published it” refers to a large group of messengers or heralds who proclaimed what God had said. The word “company” suggests not just a few individuals, but a great multitude united for a common purpose. This divine origin and abundant human response are two key truths: the message comes from God, not from human invention, and the response is a large, effective multitude.

This pattern continues in the New Testament. In Matthew 28:19-20, Jesus commands His disciples to go and make disciples of all nations, teaching them to observe all that He commanded. Just as God gave a word in the psalm, Jesus gives His commission, and His followers are to publish it everywhere. The Old Testament prophets also spoke with “Thus says the Lord,” showing that the message always originates from God, not from human invention. This connection shows that the pattern of God giving a word and His people proclaiming it continues in the church age.

This verse calls every believer to be part of the great company of publishers. Sharing God’s word is not optional; it is a privilege and a responsibility. The work is not solitary but communal. When believers unite to proclaim the gospel, their impact is greater. The success of the message does not depend on human eloquence but on the power of the word itself, which God has given. Therefore, we are to be faithful in publishing, trusting that God will bring the increase. Effective witness is rooted in receiving God’s word and then faithfully sharing it with others.

Consider how you can join the great company today. You may not stand before a crowd, but you can share God’s word with a neighbor, a friend, or a family member. The same Lord who gave the word in Psalm 68 still speaks through Scripture. He blesses the efforts of those who publish His truth. Trust in His word, rely on its power, and take your place among the messengers.
