Psalms 69:34
Let the heaven and earth praise him, the seas, and every thing that moveth therein.
Psalms 69:34 (KJV)
Context
Psalm 69 is a lament written by King David during a time of deep distress. He cries out for deliverance from enemies and suffering, yet the psalm ends with confident praise. In verse 34, David calls on the whole creation to praise God, showing that God’s glory and authority reach far beyond one person’s troubles.
Meaning
David first calls the heavens to praise God. This includes the sky and the angels who dwell there. The call then moves to the earth, covering all land, plants, animals, and people. Finally, he names the seas and everything that moves in them. In ancient times, the sea often stood for chaos and danger. By including it, David declares that even the most frightening parts of creation are under God’s control and should honour Him.
The verse uses a figure of speech called personification, giving voice to things that cannot speak. This pictures all creation joining together in worship. It reminds us that God’s majesty fills every corner of the universe, from the highest heaven to the deepest ocean. The call is universal, showing that God’s saving work deserves praise from everything He made.
Biblical connections
Other psalms and prophets use the same picture. Psalm 96:11-13 calls the heavens, earth, and sea to rejoice before the Lord. Isaiah 44:23 and Isaiah 49:13 also summon creation to sing. These passages agree that God’s saving power deserves praise from everything He made. The angels in heaven praised God at Christ’s birth, as Luke 2:14 records, showing that the heavenly part of creation already joins this chorus.
Application
This verse teaches us to see God’s greatness in the world around us. When we observe the sky, the land, or the sea, we can remember that they all declare His glory. Our own praise joins with theirs. Even when we face hardship, as David did, we can still trust that God rules over all things and is worthy of worship. Every part of creation has a role in praising Him, and we are invited to take our place in that chorus.
Reflection
Consider how the vastness of creation shows God’s power. The same God who hears your prayers also holds the seas in His hand. Let this truth turn your heart toward praise, no matter what circumstances you face.
