Psalms 72:19

Posted on 18 May at 15:15

“And blessed be his glorious name forever: and let the whole earth be filled with his glory; Amen, and Amen.”

This verse is the concluding verse of Psalm 72, which is attributed to King Solomon. It is a prayer for the prosperity and righteous rule of the king, and it reflects the Messianic hope and the universal reign of God.

Glorifying God’s Name:The verse begins by declaring, “And blessed be his glorious name forever.” This is a proclamation of praise and adoration for God’s name. The Hebrew word for “glorious” (kabod) means weighty, honourable, or majestic. It emphasises the greatness and splendour of God’s name. By blessing and glorifying God’s name, we acknowledge His sovereignty, holiness, and worthiness of praise.

Filling the Earth with God’s Glory:The verse continues, “and let the whole earth be filled with his glory.” This statement expresses the desire for the entire earth to be filled with the manifestation of God’s glory. It speaks of a global recognition and acknowledgement of God’s presence, power, and majesty. When the earth is filled with God’s glory, it signifies a state of righteousness, peace, and worship where God’s authority is acknowledged and honoured by all.

Amen, and Amen:The verse concludes with the repetition of the word “Amen.” In Hebrew, “Amen” means “truly” or “so be it.” It is an affirmation of agreement, confirming the truth and certainty of the preceding statements. By saying “Amen” twice, the psalmist emphasises the firmness and assurance of the blessings pronounced. It signifies a heartfelt desire for God’s name to be blessed and for His glory to fill the earth.

Overall, Psalms 72:19 is a powerful declaration of praise and a prayer for the exaltation of God’s name and the manifestation of His glory throughout the whole earth. It reflects the longing for God’s righteous rule and the universal recognition of His sovereignty. As believers, we can join in this prayer and strive to live in a way that brings honour to God’s name, spreads His glory, and contributes to the fulfilment of this divine desire.
