Psalms 73:17
Until I went into the sanctuary of God; then understood I their end.
Psalms 73:17 (KJV)
Context
Psalm 73 is a wisdom psalm by Asaph, a musician in King David’s court. He wrestles honestly with a common problem: the wicked seem to prosper while the righteous suffer. This verse marks the turning point of the whole psalm.
Meaning
The “sanctuary of God” means the place of worship and the presence of God Himself. When Asaph entered that place, his perspective changed. The Hebrew word for “end” (acharit) means more than the final moment of life; it points to the outcome, destiny, or future of the wicked. In God’s presence, Asaph understood that their prosperity is temporary and their end is destruction.
Biblical connections
This insight is confirmed in Psalm 73:18-20, where the psalmist describes how the wicked are set in slippery places and come to desolation. The New Testament shows that Christ is the ultimate sanctuary, the one through whom we have access to God (Hebrews 10:19-22). In Christ, we see the full revelation of God’s justice and mercy, and we are assured that the wicked will be judged and the righteous will be vindicated.
Application
When we are troubled by the success of the wicked, we should not rely on human reasoning alone. Instead, we should enter God’s presence through prayer, worship, and reading the Word. There we gain a heavenly perspective on earthly matters. We can bring our doubts and questions to God, trusting that He will give us the understanding we need. This verse also warns against envying the wicked, for their apparent success is fleeting.
Reflection
Asaph’s experience teaches us to focus on eternal values rather than envying temporary success. God’s justice is certain, and the righteous will ultimately be vindicated. Let us seek His presence daily, so that our hearts may be anchored in His truth.
