Psalms 72:13

Posted on 18 May at 15:15

“He shall spare the poor and needy, and shall save the souls of the needy.”

Psalm 72:13 (KJV):

“He shall spare the poor and needy, and shall save the souls of the needy.”

Context:Psalm 72 is attributed to King Solomon and is often considered a royal psalm or a prayer for the righteous rule of a king. It reflects on the qualities and responsibilities of a just ruler and expresses the desire for God’s blessings and righteousness to be bestowed upon the king.

In verse 13, the psalmist describes the compassionate nature of the righteous ruler. It emphasizes two key actions that the ruler will undertake:

“He shall spare the poor and needy”: This phrase highlights the king’s responsibility to show mercy and compassion toward the impoverished and disadvantaged members of society. The word “spare” suggests that the king will have a heart of generosity and refrain from exploiting or oppressing the poor. Instead, he will extend his help and support to them.

“And shall save the souls of the needy”: Here, the psalmist emphasizes the ruler’s role in providing deliverance and protection for the vulnerable. The phrase “save the souls” can be understood both literally, as physical deliverance from harm, and metaphorically, as the preservation of their well-being and dignity. The king is expected to champion the cause of the needy, defending their rights and meeting their needs.

Overall, this verse portrays a ruler who exercises justice, compassion, and care for the less fortunate. It paints a picture of a leader who prioritizes the welfare of the poor and needy, seeking to alleviate their suffering and save them from their difficulties.

  • Social justice:This verse encourages leaders, both in the political and spiritual realms, to prioritise the well-being of the poor and needy. It calls them to act with compassion, mercy, and generosity, actively working to alleviate the suffering and injustice faced by the less privileged.
  • Responsibility of leaders:The verse serves as a reminder to leaders of their duty to protect and defend the vulnerable members of society. It highlights the importance of not only meeting their immediate physical needs but also safeguarding their dignity, rights, and overall well-being.
  • Jesus as the ultimate example:This verse also points to Jesus Christ as the perfect embodiment of the compassionate ruler. In His earthly ministry, Jesus consistently showed love, mercy, and concern for the poor, needy, and marginalised. As followers of Christ, we can look to His example and seek to imitate His compassion and care in our own lives.

Remember, the study of Scripture is an ongoing process, and it is always beneficial to explore various translations, consult commentaries, and engage in discussions with fellow believers to gain a deeper understanding of God’s Word.
