Psalms 72:14

Listen to this article

“He shall redeem their soul from deceit and violence: and precious shall their blood be in his sight.”

Context:Psalm 72 is attributed to King Solomon and is often considered a messianic psalm that speaks of the reign of a righteous and just king. It describes the blessings and responsibilities of the ruler and the prosperity and peace that will result from his righteous rule.

Redemption of the soul:In this verse, the psalmist declares that the king will redeem the souls of his people from deceit and violence. This points to the role of a just ruler who protects and delivers his subjects from oppression, falsehood, and harm. The redemption mentioned here refers to the deliverance of the people from the negative effects of deceit and violence, both spiritually and physically.

Deceit and violence:Deceit refers to deception, lies, or falsehood. Violence indicates any form of oppression, injustice, or physical harm. The psalmist acknowledges that the king’s reign will be characterised by the eradication of deceit and violence, ensuring that his people are protected and live in a just and peaceful society.

Precious blood:The verse concludes by stating that the blood of the people will be precious in the sight of the king. This phrase suggests that the ruler values and cherishes the lives of his subjects. The blood represents the life essence and signifies the worth and significance of each individual. The king’s regard for their blood emphasises the high value he places on their well-being and safety.

Messianic interpretation:While this psalm was initially attributed to Solomon and could be seen as describing his reign, many scholars also recognise messianic undertones in this psalm. The qualities and actions attributed to the king in Psalm 72 align with the characteristics and mission of the promised Messiah. In the Christian tradition, Jesus Christ is seen as the ultimate fulfilment of this Messianic prophecy, as he redeems people from sin, deceit, and violence through his sacrificial death on the cross.
