Psalms 99:5

Listen to this article

“Exalt ye the LORD our God, and worship at his footstool; for he is holy.”

Context:Psalm 99 is a psalm of praise and worship that exalts the Lord as a holy and just God. It emphasizes His greatness, power, and authority. The psalmist encourages the people to worship and exalt God.

The verse begins with the call to “exalt ye the LORD our God.” To exalt means to lift up, magnify, or elevate someone or something. In this case, it refers to lifting up the name of the Lord in praise and honor. The psalmist urges the people to give God the highest place in their hearts and minds, acknowledging His supremacy and greatness.

The verse continues with the command to “worship at his footstool.” In biblical imagery, the footstool represents the place of God’s presence and authority. It signifies His throne or dwelling place. Worshiping at His footstool means coming before God with reverence and awe, recognizing His majesty and bowing down in adoration.

The verse concludes with the reason for exalting and worshiping God—because He is holy. Holiness is one of the essential attributes of God. It refers to His absolute moral purity, separateness, and perfection. God’s holiness sets Him apart from all creation and makes Him deserving of worship and honor. Recognizing His holiness helps us approach Him with reverence and humility.

As believers, we are called to exalt and magnify the Lord in our lives. We can do this by acknowledging His greatness, praising Him in our worship, and making Him the central focus of our thoughts and actions.

Worship is not merely an external activity but a heartfelt expression of our reverence and love for God. Like the psalmist, we should approach God with humility, recognizing His authority and bowing down before Him in awe.

The understanding of God’s holiness should lead us to live lives that reflect His character. We are called to pursue holiness and strive to live in accordance with His righteous standards. Recognizing God’s holiness also helps us grasp the significance of His grace and mercy extended to us through Jesus Christ.
