Psalms 99:4
The king’s strength also loveth judgment; thou dost establish equity, thou executest judgment and righteousness in Jacob.
Psalms 99:4 (KJV)
Context
Psalm 99 is a royal psalm that proclaims the Lord as King over all the earth. The psalmist calls the nations to tremble before His holiness. In verse 4, the focus turns to the character of His rule. The king’s strength is not used for selfish gain. Instead, His power is joined to His love for justice. The name “Jacob” points to Israel, the covenant people. God’s just rule is exercised in the midst of His redeemed community.
Meaning
The Hebrew word for judgment is “mishpat,” meaning justice or fair decision. The word for righteousness is “tzedakah,” which describes God’s covenant faithfulness and His commitment to what is right. The verse declares that God personally establishes equity. He does not merely approve of justice; He actively executes it. His strength is never arbitrary or oppressive. It is always guided by His moral perfection. Unlike earthly rulers whose power often leads to corruption, the Lord uses His might to uphold fairness and righteousness.
Biblical connections
This portrait of God as the just King is fulfilled in Jesus Christ. Christ perfectly embodies the King whose strength executes divine justice. He offers salvation and promises a future reign where all things will be made right. The same God who established equity in Israel will one day bring perfect justice to the whole earth.
Application
This truth gives believers confidence. We can trust that God’s judgments are not cold or dispassionate. They are executed with deep love for truth. In a fallen world, we often see the wicked prosper and the righteous suffer. This verse reminds us that God’s justice remains sovereign and will ultimately prevail. Because the Lord loves justice, those who follow Him are called to love what is right, deal honestly with others, and reject all forms of iniquity. His heavenly throne perceives all things, allowing Him to rule with unblemished equity and wisdom.
Reflection
God’s power and justice are perfectly united. His strength is always used for the good of His people and the establishment of what is right. We can rest in the assurance that the King who loves judgment will never fail to do what is just.
