Psalms 99:7

He spake unto them in the cloudy pillar: they kept his testimonies, and the ordinance that he gave them.

Psalm 99 praises God as King, exalting His majesty, holiness, and righteous rule. This verse recalls a specific moment in Israel’s wilderness journey when God spoke to His people from the cloudy pillar. That pillar guided them by day and represented God’s presence among them. Meaning

The cloudy pillar points back to the time when God met with Moses at the tabernacle, as recorded in Exodus 33:9-10. There the cloud descended, and the Lord spoke with Moses. In Psalm 99:7, the same God who guided Israel also communicated His commands. The people’s response was obedience: they “kept his testimonies” and “the ordinance that he gave them.” Testimonies are God’s authoritative words that reveal His character and will. The ordinance refers to the specific statutes and laws He gave through Moses. Keeping these meant more than outward compliance; it was a heartfelt commitment to God’s revealed truth.
