Psalms 99:9
Exalt the Lord our God, and worship at his holy hill; for the Lord our God is holy.
Psalms 99:9 (KJV)
Context
This verse closes Psalm 99, a psalm that celebrates the Lord as King. The psalmist calls the people to exalt God and to worship at His holy hill. The psalm recalls Moses, Aaron, and Samuel, who called on the Lord and were answered. Their example shows that God is holy, forgiving, and just. The call to worship is not optional; it is the right response to who God is.
Meaning
To “exalt” means to lift up, honor, and praise someone of great worth. Here the call is to exalt the Lord, acknowledging His sovereignty, greatness, and majesty. This is not merely an emotional feeling but a deliberate act of reverence and praise. The “holy hill” points to Mount Zion, where the temple stood and where God’s presence dwelled among His people. Worship at that hill meant approaching God with reverence and awe. The verse gives the reason for this worship: “for the Lord our God is holy.” God’s holiness means He is morally pure, separate from sin, and perfect in righteousness and glory. His holiness is not just one attribute; it is the very essence of His character, setting Him apart from all else.
Biblical connections
Psalm 99:5 earlier says, “Exalt ye the Lord our God, and worship at his footstool.” The move from the footstool to the holy hill shows a progression from humble submission to joyful adoration in God’s presence. In the New Testament, Jesus taught that true worship is not limited to a place but is in spirit and truth (John 4:21-24). Christ Himself is the true temple, and through Him all believers may approach God. The apostle Peter also urges believers to be holy because God is holy (1 Peter 1:15-16). The examples of Moses, Aaron, and Samuel remind us that God responds to those who call on Him, and He is both forgiving and just.
Application
This verse teaches us to approach God with deep reverence and praise. Our worship should be marked by awe, humility, and adoration. We can worship God anywhere, because His presence is with us through Christ. We are also called to reflect God’s holiness in our conduct, thoughts, and actions. As we exalt Him in our hearts and lives, we honor Him as the holy God He is. Let us also join in public worship, for the holy hill reminds us of the importance of gathering with God’s people to praise Him together.
Reflection
Consider how you exalt God in your daily life. Do you recognize His holiness in your worship and your choices? Let the truth that the Lord is holy shape your reverence and your obedience. Worship Him with joy, knowing that He is worthy of all honor.
