Psalms 111:10
The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom: a good understanding have all they that do his commandments: his praise endureth for ever.
Psalms 111:10 (KJV)
Context
Psalm 111 is a song of praise and thanksgiving. It celebrates the greatness, faithfulness, and righteous works of God. The psalm is written as an acrostic, with each verse beginning with a successive letter of the Hebrew alphabet. This structure shows the ordered and complete nature of God’s praise. The verse under study is the concluding summary, tying together wisdom, obedience, and enduring praise.
Meaning
The verse begins with the fear of the LORD as the beginning of wisdom. In the Bible, this fear does not mean terror or fright. It means reverence, awe, and deep respect for God’s holiness, majesty, and authority. This reverential fear is the starting point and foundation of true wisdom. It is not merely intellectual knowledge but practical insight for righteous living.
The second part connects wisdom with obedience: “a good understanding have all they that do his commandments.” True understanding is inseparable from a life of obedience. Wisdom is not abstract; it is demonstrated in faithful practice. Those who follow God’s precepts show that they have genuine insight.
The final phrase, “his praise endureth for ever,” affirms the eternal nature of God’s praise. Because God is faithful and His works are great, His praise is not temporary but everlasting. The verse moves from the foundation of wisdom (fear of the Lord), to the evidence of wisdom (obedience), to the result of wisdom (eternal praise).
Biblical connections
This verse echoes the broader biblical theme found in Proverbs, where the fear of the Lord is also described as the beginning of wisdom (Proverbs 9:10). This connection reinforces the consistency of biblical teaching on the source of true wisdom.
Application
This verse calls believers to cultivate a reverent awe of God, to pursue wisdom through obedience to His commandments, and to live in a way that contributes to His eternal praise. It challenges the notion that wisdom is merely intellectual, insisting that it is rooted in a right relationship with God and expressed in faithful living.
Reflection
Consider how your daily choices reflect a healthy fear of the Lord. Does your understanding of God lead to obedient action? Let the enduring nature of God’s praise shape your worship, knowing that your reverence and obedience are part of a praise that never fades.
