Psalms 118:11

They compassed me about; yea, they compassed me about: but in the name of the Lord I will destroy them.

Psalms 118:11 (KJV)

This verse belongs to a psalm of thanksgiving for deliverance. The surrounding lines, including Psalms 118:10 and Psalms 118:12, describe the speaker surrounded by many nations. The repetition of the phrase “They compassed me about” stresses how often and how fiercely the enemies pressed in from every side. The attack was not brief or distant; it was persistent and close.

The verse moves in three steps. First, the speaker states the attack: “They compassed me about.” Then he repeats it with emphasis: “yea, they compassed me about.” Finally, he declares his response: “but in the name of the Lord I will destroy them.” The name of the Lord means His revealed character and authority. Acting in that name is not human strength but reliance on God’s power and covenant faithfulness. The psalmist’s confidence is rooted in who God is, not in his own ability.

Psalm 118 celebrates God’s steadfast love and points forward to the Messiah. The speaker’s confidence in God’s name foreshadows Christ, who faced enemies and death yet triumphed through resurrection. For believers, this verse calls for trust in Christ’s victory over sin and death. That victory is the foundation for our own confidence when we are surrounded.

When opposition surrounds us, we can pray in Jesus’ name and stand firm in faith. The verse encourages reliance on God rather than on our own ability. It reminds us that God is greater than any force that encircles us. We can face pressure with the same confidence the psalmist showed, because the same Lord is with us.

Consider a situation where you feel hemmed in by difficulties. How might you respond “in the name of the Lord” rather than in fear? Let this verse shape your prayer and your confidence in God’s deliverance.
