Psalms 121:8

Listen to this article

“The Lord shall preserve thy going out and thy coming in from this time forth, and even for evermore.”

Context:The book of Psalms is a collection of poetic prayers, hymns, and songs written by various authors. Psalm 121 is known as a "Psalm of Ascents," traditionally recited or sung by Jewish pilgrims as they journeyed to Jerusalem for the annual feasts. It is a song of trust in God’s protection and care.

The Lord’s Preservation:In this verse, the psalmist proclaims that the Lord (Yahweh) is the one who preserves or watches over the well-being and safety of His people. The word "preserve" implies God’s constant vigilance and guardianship. It signifies that God is actively involved in protecting His children.

Going out and Coming in:The phrase "going out and coming in" represents the entirety of one’s life, encompassing all activities, undertakings, and movements. It expresses the idea that God’s preservation covers every aspect of a person’s existence. Whether leaving or returning home, embarking on a journey, engaging in daily tasks, or facing challenges, the Lord is present and involved in each step.

God’s Faithfulness:The psalmist declares that the Lord’s preservation is not limited to a specific period but extends from "this time forth" and "even for evermore." This phrase emphasizes the everlasting nature of God’s care and faithfulness. It assures believers that God’s watchful eye and protective hand will endure throughout their lives and beyond, into eternity.

Application:Psalm 121:8 reminds us of the unchanging nature of God’s faithfulness and His commitment to His people. It encourages us to trust in His providence and care in all areas of life. We can find comfort and confidence in knowing that God is present, watching over us, and working on our behalf, regardless of the circumstances.

  • In times of uncertainty or fear, we can take refuge in the assurance that God will preserve and protect us.
  • We can rely on God’s guidance and wisdom as we make decisions and navigate life’s journeys.
  • This verse also reminds us of the eternal nature of God’s love and protection. Our relationship with Him extends beyond this earthly life, offering hope and security in the future.
