Psalms 123:4

Our soule is exceedingly filled with the scorning of those that are at ease: and with the contempt of the proud. Psalms 123:4 (KJV)

Let us explore Psalm 123:4 from the King James Version (KJV) of the Bible. Psalm 123 is a short psalm categorized among the fifteen Psalms of Ascent (Psalms 120‑134). These songs were sung by the Israelites as they ascended to Jerusalem for the annual festivals—Passover, Pentecost, and Tabernacles—and are traditionally attributed to King David. The psalms of ascent carry themes of trust in God, dependence on Him, and a plea for His mercy and protection.

In verse 4 the psalmist declares, “Our soul is exceedingly filled with the scorning of those that are at ease, and with the contempt of the proud.” This vivid language expresses the distress caused by scorn and contempt from people who are comfortable, self‑assured, and perhaps arrogant. The verse highlights the opposition the faithful may encounter from those who are at ease in their own pride.

Three key lessons emerge from this passage. First, humility and dependence on God are emphasized. The psalmist’s plight shows the importance of relying on God rather than placing trust in people; when faced with scorn, the psalmist turns to God for guidance and deliverance. Second, perseverance in the midst of opposition is taught. The psalmist’s endurance encourages believers to remain steadfast in faith despite ridicule or hostility, trusting in God’s providence. Third, the challenges of righteousness are acknowledged. Those who seek to live righteously may face contempt from the proud, yet the psalmist affirms that God sees and understands these trials and offers comfort and strength.

Application to our lives follows naturally. As followers of God we may encounter opposition and contempt from those who do not share our faith or values. In such circumstances we are called to turn to God for comfort, guidance, and strength, maintaining humility, depending on His provision, and persevering in our commitment to righteousness despite the challenges we face.
