Listen to this article

“Thy name, O Lord, endureth forever; and thy memorial, O Lord, throughout all generations.”

Context: Psalm 135 is a psalm of praise, exalting the greatness and sovereignty of God. It emphasizes His power and mighty works, calling the people to worship and praise Him.

The enduring name of the Lord: In this verse, the psalmist declares that the name of the Lord endures forever. The name of God represents His nature, character, and authority. It signifies His eternal existence, faithfulness, and unchanging nature. Unlike human names that may fade away or be forgotten, God’s name remains constant and everlasting. This emphasizes the permanence and stability of God.

God’s memorial throughout all generations: The verse also speaks of God’s memorial enduring throughout all generations. A memorial serves as a remembrance or commemoration of something significant. In this case, it refers to God’s reputation, His mighty acts, and His faithfulness, which are passed down from generation to generation. Despite the passage of time, the memory and knowledge of God’s works are preserved, providing a foundation of faith and hope for each successive generation.

Application for believers:

  • a. Trust in God’s enduring nature: As believers, we can find assurance in the fact that God’s name endures forever. In a world that is constantly changing, we can rely on His unchanging nature. We can trust in His promises, His faithfulness, and His unfailing love.
  • b. Remember God’s works: It is essential for us to remember and pass down the testimonies of God’s mighty acts throughout history. By doing so, we strengthen our faith, encourage others, and help future generations understand the faithfulness and power of God. We can reflect on His past faithfulness to gain confidence in His present and future work in our lives.
  • c. Reflect God’s eternal nature: Just as God’s name endures forever, as His followers, we should reflect His character in our lives. We are called to live in a manner that represents the eternal nature of our Lord. This means pursuing righteousness, holiness, and love, and demonstrating His unchanging and steadfast attributes to the world around us.
