Psalms 135:13

Thy name, O Lord, endureth for ever; and thy memorial, O Lord, throughout all generations.

Psalms 135:13 (KJV)

Psalm 135 is a psalm of praise that exalts the greatness and sovereignty of God. It emphasizes His power and mighty works, calls the people to worship, and contrasts the true God with the idols of the nations. In this setting, the psalmist declares the permanence of God’s name and memorial.

The name of the Lord represents His nature, character, and authority. It signifies His eternal existence, faithfulness, and unchanging nature. Unlike human names that may fade or be forgotten, God’s name remains constant and everlasting, emphasizing the permanence and stability of God.

The verse also speaks of God’s memorial enduring throughout all generations. A memorial serves as a remembrance of something significant. Here it refers to God’s reputation, His mighty acts, and His faithfulness, which are passed down from generation to generation. Despite the passage of time, the memory and knowledge of God’s works are preserved, providing a foundation of faith and hope for each successive generation.

In the biblical worldview, a person’s name is closely tied to their identity. God’s name reveals His essence and very being, which are unchanging and everlasting. His fame, reputation, and renown are not limited to a specific time or group but transcend all ages. The name of Christ also endures forever, including His person and offices, His Gospel, and His people who are called by His name.

  • Trust in God’s enduring nature: In a world that is constantly changing, believers can rely on God’s unchanging nature. We can trust in His promises, His faithfulness, and His unfailing love.

  • Remember God’s works: It is essential to remember and pass down the testimonies of God’s mighty acts throughout history. By doing so, we strengthen our faith, encourage others, and help future generations understand the faithfulness and power of God. Reflecting on His past faithfulness gives confidence in His present and future work in our lives.

  • Reflect God’s eternal nature: As followers of God, we are called to live in a manner that represents the eternal nature of our Lord. This means pursuing righteousness, holiness, and love, and demonstrating His unchanging and steadfast attributes to the world around us.

God’s name and memorial endure forever, offering a stable foundation for faith. His character and deeds are worthy of remembrance and praise. As each generation learns of His faithfulness, the knowledge of His greatness continues, calling all to worship Him.
