Psalms 136:9
“The moon and stars to rule by night: for his mercy endureth for ever.”
1. Context: Psalm 136 is a psalm of thanksgiving and praise to God for His enduring mercy. The psalmist highlights various aspects of God’s creation, deliverance, and provision for His people.
2. The Moon and Stars: In verse 9, the psalmist acknowledges the role of the moon and stars as rulers of the night. This recognition emphasises God’s sovereignty and His control over the heavenly bodies. The moon and stars serve as a testament to God’s creative power and order in the universe.
3. God’s Mercy: The phrase “for his mercy endureth forever” is repeated as a refrain throughout Psalm 136. It underscores the central theme of the psalm, emphasising that God’s mercy is eternal and unchanging. The psalmist attributes the moon and stars’ rule by night to God’s mercy, implying that even the celestial bodies function according to His benevolent design.
4. Reflections on God’s Mercy:
- a. Unfailing Love: God’s mercy is closely linked to His unfailing love. It is not dependent on human merit or circumstances but is rooted in His unchanging character.
- b. Divine Order: The reference to the moon and stars points to the divine order established by God in the heavens. Just as the moon and stars faithfully carry out their functions, so does God’s mercy persistently endure.
- c. Day and Night: The moon and stars govern the night, highlighting the continuity of God’s mercy. God’s mercy is not limited to specific moments or seasons but remains constant, both day and night.
- d. Creator’s Design: The moon and stars, as part of God’s creation, showcase His wisdom, power, and faithfulness. They serve as a reminder that the same God who established order in the heavens is the source of enduring mercy for His people.
5. Application:
- a. Gratitude: Like the psalmist, we can express thankfulness to God for His enduring mercy. Recognising the constancy of His mercy, day and night, should lead us to praise Him.
- b. Trust: Just as God governs the moon and stars with wisdom, we can trust in His sovereign rule over our lives. His mercy extends to us continually, even in the darkest of times.
- c. Hope: The unchanging nature of God’s mercy offers hope and assurance. We can rely on His mercy, knowing that it will not fail us.
