Psalms 148:13
“Let them praise the name of the LORD: for his name alone is excellent; his glory is above the earth and heaven.”
1. Context of Psalm 148: Psalm 148 is a hymn of praise and adoration to God. It is part of a collection of psalms known as the “Psalms of Praise” or “Hallelujah Psalms” (Psalm 146-150) that exalt and magnify the name of the Lord. The psalmist calls upon all of creation, including the heavens, the earth, and everything in them, to praise and worship the Lord.
2. The call to praise: The psalmist begins by urging all of creation to praise the name of the Lord. The “name” of the Lord represents His character, reputation, and all that He is. It signifies His authority, power, and attributes. The call to praise is not limited to humans alone but extends to every part of creation, including the celestial beings, the sun, moon, and stars, as well as the earthly elements like mountains, hills, and animals.
3. The excellence of His name: The psalmist emphasizes that the name of the Lord alone is excellent. It means that God’s name is superior, surpassing all other names and deserving of utmost reverence and honor. The name of the Lord encompasses His majesty, holiness, and perfection. It signifies His unique identity as the Creator and Sustainer of the universe and the source of all goodness, love, and salvation.
4. His glory above the earth and heaven: The psalmist declares that the glory of the Lord exceeds the bounds of both the earth and heaven. This statement emphasizes the transcendence and greatness of God’s glory. It surpasses all created things and extends beyond the physical realm. God’s glory is not limited by space or time but encompasses all of creation. It signifies His splendor, magnificence, and divine presence.
5. Application to our lives: Psalm 148:13 reminds us of the importance of praising and exalting the name of the Lord. It encourages us to join with all of creation in acknowledging God’s greatness and giving Him the worship and adoration He deserves. As we reflect on His excellent name and His glory that surpasses the earth and heaven, it should inspire us to offer our heartfelt praise, gratitude, and devotion to God.
