Proverbs 4:9

She shall give to thine head an ornament of grace: a crown of glory shall she deliver to thee.

Proverbs 4:9 (KJV)

This verse closes a passage where a father urges his son to hold fast to wisdom (Proverbs 4:1-9). In the surrounding lines, the father tells the son to love, exalt, and embrace wisdom. The promise here is the reward for that devotion. The father’s instruction is not casual advice; it is a solemn call to treasure wisdom above all else.

In Proverbs, wisdom is pictured as a woman, often called Lady Wisdom. The word “she” points to wisdom itself. The “ornament of grace” is a garland or wreath placed on the head, a sign of beauty and divine favour. The “crown of glory” is a turban or diadem, showing honour and dignity. These are not just human rewards; they come from God. The Hebrew words for “ornament” and “crown” suggest something valuable and beautiful, given to the one who treasures wisdom. The grace here is not mere charm but the favour that flows from God, and the crown points to the honour He bestows both now and forever.

The New Testament reveals that Christ is the wisdom of God (1 Corinthians 1:24). Through faith in Jesus, believers receive the wisdom that brings grace and glory. The crown of glory also points to the eternal reward that Christ gives to those who faithfully follow Him (James 1:12, 1 Peter 5:4). This verse, then, looks beyond this life to the honour that awaits the wise. The same imagery of a crown appears throughout Proverbs (Proverbs 1:9, 3:22, 14:24, 16:31) to signify honour and blessing. Rejecting wisdom, however, leads to shame (Proverbs 3:35), so the choice is clear.

Wisdom is not passive; it must be actively pursued. This means studying God’s Word, seeking counsel from godly mentors, and keeping a humble, teachable heart. As believers, we should value wisdom above all else, knowing that God honours those who honour Him. Wisdom helps us make right choices, avoid pitfalls, and live in a way that blesses others. It brings a quiet beauty to our character and a dignity that cannot be bought. Practically, we can ask God daily for wisdom, meditate on Scripture, and surround ourselves with people who encourage godly living.

Consider what you treasure most. Do you seek wisdom as a precious gift, or do you let other concerns crowd it out? The promise is sure: wisdom gives grace and glory. As you walk with Christ, who is wisdom itself, you grow in understanding and reflect His grace. Trust that God will guide you and bring about His purposes through a life shaped by His wisdom.
