Proverbs 27:26

Posted on 18 May at 14:10

“The lambs are for thy clothing, and the goats are the price of the field.”

To gain a deeper understanding of this verse, let’s explore its context within the book of Proverbs and examine its significance.

The book of Proverbs is a collection of wise sayings and teachings attributed primarily to King Solomon, known for his great wisdom. These proverbs contain practical advice for daily living and cover various aspects of life, including relationships, work, finances, and moral conduct.

Proverbs 27:26 is found in the latter part of the book and emphasizes the importance of proper stewardship and the value of one’s possessions.

Metaphorical Meaning:In this verse, two elements are mentioned: lambs and goats. Symbolically, these animals represent possessions, specifically livestock. The phrase “The lambs are for thy clothing” implies that the lambs provide wool or clothing material. On the other hand, “the goats are the price of the field” suggests that goats were a form of wealth or currency used for acquiring land or purchasing property.

Stewardship and Care:By mentioning lambs and goats, this verse highlights the need for responsible stewardship. In biblical times, livestock was an essential part of an individual’s wealth and livelihood. Caring for the flock, ensuring their well‑being, and using their resources wisely were crucial aspects of managing one’s possessions. This verse reminds us of the importance of taking care of what we have been entrusted with and using our resources prudently.

The Value of Hard Work:The mention of the goats being the price of the field also highlights the concept of hard work and the acquisition of property. Goats were considered valuable, and their sale could provide the means to purchase a field. This verse encourages diligence, industry, and responsible financial management. It reminds us that hard work and wise choices can lead to the accumulation of assets and the ability to invest in larger endeavors.

Spiritual Implications:While this verse primarily addresses material possessions and prudent stewardship, we can also draw spiritual applications from it. In a broader sense, the “lambs” can be associated with righteousness and purity, and the “goats” can represent sin or worldly attachments. Just as we are to care for our material possessions wisely, we are also called to guard our hearts and minds, protecting them from sinful influences and cultivating righteousness in our lives.

Overall, Proverbs 27:26 emphasizes the importance of responsible stewardship, hard work, and wise financial management. It encourages us to value and care for the resources we have been given and to use them wisely for the betterment of ourselves and others. Additionally, it serves as a reminder to cultivate spiritual integrity and guard against the influences of sin in our lives.
