Proverbs 28:7

“Whoso keepeth the law is a wise son: but he that is a companion of riotous men shameth his father.”

Context:This verse highlights two contrasting paths: one of wisdom and obedience to the law, and the other of associating with riotous or wicked individuals.

The verse emphasizes the importance of obeying God’s commandments and living in accordance with His laws. It signifies that those who choose to follow and keep the law are regarded as wise sons or daughters. This extends beyond mere legal compliance to a heart posture that seeks to honor God and align with His righteous standards.

Wisdom and obedience:Wisdom, in the biblical context, refers to more than mere knowledge; it encompasses understanding and skillful application of knowledge in daily life. The verse suggests that those who choose to live wisely, guided by God’s principles, demonstrate their obedience to Him. By making wise choices, seeking godly counsel, and living uprightly, individuals exhibit their reverence for God and His instructions.

Companionship with riotous men:The latter part of the verse cautions against associating with riotous or wicked individuals. Riotous men can be understood as those who engage in unruly behavior, follow sinful ways, or disregard God’s commandments. Being a companion of such individuals can lead to moral compromise, tarnish one’s reputation, and bring shame upon one’s family.

Shame to one’s father:The verse concludes by emphasizing that associating with riotous men brings shame to one’s father. This implies that our actions and choices reflect not only upon ourselves but also upon our family and the legacy we carry. Our behaviour can either bring honour or disgrace to our parents and family name. Therefore, it is vital to make wise choices and select companions who influence us positively.
