John 14:19

Yet a little while, and the world seeth me no more; but ye see me: because I live, ye shall live also.

John 14:19 (KJV)

Jesus spoke these words during the Farewell Discourse at the Last Supper, preparing His disciples for His imminent death, resurrection, and departure. He knew they would soon face confusion and grief, so He gave them promises to sustain them.

“Yet a little while” points to the short time before His crucifixion and burial. Jesus then contrasts the world with His disciples: the world, which sees only with physical eyes, would see Him no more after His death, but the disciples would see Him after His resurrection. This seeing is not merely physical; it also includes spiritual perception, enabled by faith and the coming Holy Spirit. The final clause, “because I live, ye shall live also,” ties the believer’s life directly to Christ’s resurrection. His victory over death is the foundation and guarantee of both present spiritual life and future resurrection life for all who believe.

This promise of life is rooted in the resurrection, which Paul later explains as the assurance that believers will also be raised (1 Corinthians 15:20-22). Jesus’ words also connect to His earlier teaching that He is the resurrection and the life (John 11:25), and to His promise of the Comforter, the Holy Spirit, who would abide with believers (John 14:16-18).

For believers today, this verse offers comfort and assurance. Though we do not see Christ physically, we see Him through faith and experience His presence through the Holy Spirit. Because He lives, we have eternal life now and the certain hope of resurrection. This truth calls us to live with confidence, knowing our life is hidden with Christ and secured by His victory over death.

How does the reality of Christ’s resurrection shape your daily life? Take time to thank Him that because He lives, you shall live also—both now and forever.
