John 16:5
But now I go my way to him that sent me; and none of you asketh me, Whither goest thou?
John 16:5 (KJV)
Context
John 16:5 is part of Jesus’ farewell discourse, which He delivered to His disciples on the night before His crucifixion. In this discourse, Jesus prepared His disciples for His imminent departure and the coming of the Holy Spirit.
Earlier in John’s Gospel, the disciples had asked where Jesus was going (John 13:36; 14:5). Now, in the shadow of the cross, they are so consumed by sorrow and confusion that they fail to ask. Jesus’ words gently expose their self-absorbed grief and redirect their attention to the purpose of His going: His return to the Father.
Meaning
In the first part of the verse, Jesus says, “But now I go my way to him that sent me.” This statement refers to His impending departure from the world and His return to the Father in heaven. The phrase “him that sent me” underscores Jesus’ divine mission and His obedience to the Father.
The second part of the verse states, “and none of you asketh me, Whither goest thou?” Jesus highlights the disciples’ failure to ask where He is going. This shows their lack of understanding and their preoccupation with His physical presence among them. The question “Whither goest thou?” is not merely about a destination but about the redemptive significance of His departure.
Biblical connections
Jesus’ going to the Father is essential for the coming of the Holy Spirit, the Comforter, as the following verses explain (John 16:7). Theologically, this verse underscores the unity of the Father and the Son in the work of salvation: the Son is sent by the Father, and His return to the Father completes His mission.
Application
For the believer, Christ’s departure was not a tragedy but a necessary step in the divine plan, leading to the gift of the Spirit and the ongoing work of redemption. The disciples’ failure to ask points to the human tendency to focus on immediate circumstances rather than the larger purposes of God.
In what ways can you deepen your understanding of Jesus’ mission, His teachings, and the work of the Holy Spirit in your life?
How can you cultivate a heart that seeks Jesus’ guidance and actively asks Him about His plans and purposes?
Remember to read the surrounding verses (John 16:1-15) to gain a more comprehensive understanding of the context and the complete discourse. Prayerfully meditate on the passage and allow the Holy Spirit to speak to you personally through His Word.
