2 Corinthians 6:7
By the word of truth, by the power of God, by the armour of righteousness on the right hand and on the left,
2 Corinthians 6:7 (KJV)
Context
Paul writes to the Corinthian church as part of a larger passage (2 Corinthians 6:3-10) where he defends his ministry by listing the hardships and spiritual resources that mark his service as a servant of God. In verse 7, he names three resources that commend his ministry: the word of truth, the power of God, and the armour of righteousness on the right hand and on the left.
Meaning
The “word of truth” refers to the gospel of Jesus Christ, the message of salvation and reconciliation. It is the truth that comes from the God of truth, has Christ as its subject matter, and is guided by the Spirit of truth. Paul’s commitment was to preach this gospel truly and sincerely, without adulterating it or mixing it with human philosophy and wisdom.
The “power of God” is the divine power that accompanies the preaching of the word, working for the conversion and salvation of souls. Paul consistently ascribed all success in ministry not to himself but to God’s power, which was also confirmed by signs, wonders, and miracles.
The “armour of righteousness” is a military metaphor. In the spiritual battle, believers are engaged in a war that is not against flesh and blood but against spiritual forces of evil. The weapons of this warfare are not carnal or worldly; they have divine power to demolish strongholds, arguments, and every pretension that sets itself up against the knowledge of God, and to take every thought captive to obey Christ (2 Corinthians 10:3-5). The righteous life of the believer—an upright and holy life—is itself a weapon that both defends against accusation and advances the cause of truth.
The phrase “on the right hand and on the left” indicates that the believer is fully equipped for both offense and defense, for pressing the cause of the gospel and for defending against attacks. The word of truth, the power of God, and the armor of righteousness equip us to face challenges from every direction, ensuring that we are fully prepared and protected.
Biblical connections
This imagery connects to the broader biblical theme of the armor of God (Ephesians 6:10-17), where truth and righteousness are key pieces of the believer’s equipment. The weapons of righteousness are not physical weapons but the spiritual resources God provides for the battles believers face.
Application
As Christians, we should rely on the truth of God’s Word to inform our beliefs, actions, and decisions. We can trust that God’s power is at work in us, enabling us to serve Him faithfully. We are called to put on the armor of righteousness, living lives that reflect our right standing with God and defending the faith with integrity.
Reflection
Consider how you can more fully rely on the word of truth, the power of God, and the armor of righteousness in your daily walk. Are you equipped to face challenges from every direction, knowing that God has provided all you need for the spiritual battle?
