Philippians 2:10
That at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of things in heaven, and things in earth, and things under the earth;
Philippians 2:10 (KJV)
Context
This verse belongs to the Christ Hymn in Philippians 2:5-11, where Paul urges believers to adopt the mind of Christ, who humbled Himself and became obedient to death on a cross. In Philippians 2:9, the Father highly exalted Him and gave Him a name above every name. Verse 10 then declares the universal response to that exaltation.
Meaning
The phrase “at the name of Jesus” points to the authority and honor of the person of Jesus Christ, not the mere sound of the word. The name represents His character and divine nature. The name “Jesus” was common among Jews, so its power lies in the One who bears it, not in the syllables themselves.
The bowing of every knee is an act of worship and submission, not merely a physical gesture. It acknowledges Jesus’ supreme lordship. The threefold description—“of things in heaven, and things in earth, and things under the earth”—shows the universal scope of His authority over all created beings: angels in heaven, people on earth, and even the dead or demonic powers under the earth.
Biblical connections
This verse connects directly to Philippians 2:11, which states that every tongue will confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father. The purpose of this universal bowing is the Father’s glory, not merely Christ’s honor. The passage as a whole affirms the deity and universal lordship of Jesus.
Application
For believers, this verse is both a comfort and a call. It assures us that every opposing power will ultimately submit to Christ. It also calls us to live in willing obedience and humility now, imitating the mindset of Christ described in the preceding verses. We have already recognized Jesus as Lord and Savior, so we align ourselves with this truth by bowing in worship and serving one another in love.
Reflection
Consider the privilege of knowing the One before whom every knee will bow. Does your daily life reflect the reverence and submission that His name deserves? Let this verse renew your worship and your commitment to live for His glory.
