Colossians 3:23

Posted on 18 May at 14:29

“And whatsoever ye do, do it heartily, as to the Lord, and not unto men.”

Certainly! Here’s a Bible study on Scripture: “And whatsoever ye do, do it heartily, as to the Lord, and not unto men.” – Colossians 3:23 (KJV)

Context:To better understand this verse, let’s consider its context. The book of Colossians was written by the Apostle Paul to the church in Colossae. In this particular passage, Paul is addressing the believers and instructing them on how to live as followers of Christ. He emphasises the importance of putting off the old self and putting on the new self in Christ.

Wholehearted Effort:The verse begins with the phrase “And whatsoever ye do.” This indicates that the instruction applies to all aspects of our lives, not just certain specific tasks. It encompasses our work, relationships, service, and everything we engage in. Paul encourages believers to approach every task and responsibility with wholeheartedness.

Doing It Heartily:Paul urges believers to do everything “heartily.” This means giving our best effort, being enthusiastic, and doing it with passion and zeal. We are called to go above and beyond mere compliance or obligation. It reflects an attitude of excellence and a desire to honour God in all that we do.

Doing It as to the Lord:The motivation behind our wholehearted effort is crucial. Paul emphasises that whatever we do, we should do it “as to the Lord.” Our work and service should not be merely directed towards pleasing people or seeking their approval, but rather to honour and please God. We are to see ourselves as working for the Lord Himself, and our actions should reflect our love and devotion to Him.

Not unto Men:While it is important to respect and honour human authority, our ultimate allegiance is to God. Paul reminds us not to become people-pleasers, seeking recognition or applause from others. Instead, we should focus on pleasing God, knowing that He sees and rewards our sincere efforts, even when they go unnoticed by others.

Application:The principle of Colossians 3:23 can be applied to various areas of our lives. Whether it’s our studies, careers, relationships, or service in the church, we should approach each task and responsibility with a wholehearted effort, doing it as if we were doing it for the Lord Himself. This mindset transforms our ordinary tasks into acts of worship and brings purpose and meaning to our daily lives.

  • Reflection:Take some time to reflect on your own life. Are there areas where you are not giving your best effort or where you are seeking the approval of others rather than seeking to honour God? How can you apply the principle of Colossians 3:23 to those areas? Ask God for the strength and grace to live out this verse and to serve Him with all your heart.

Remember, Colossians 3:23 reminds us that our work, no matter how seemingly insignificant, can have eternal significance when done with the right motivation and with wholeheartedness as unto the Lord.
