Hebrews 8:4

For if he were on earth, he should not be a priest, seeing that there are priests that offer gifts according to the law:

Hebrews 8:4 (KJV)

Hebrews addresses Jewish believers tempted to abandon faith in Jesus. The author exalts Christ as the superior high priest and shows the New Covenant’s superiority over the Old.

In Hebrews 8:4, the author contrasts the earthly priesthood under the Mosaic Law with Christ’s priesthood. The Levitical priesthood, established by the Law, was limited to Aaron’s descendants and served in the earthly tabernacle and temple. Jesus, from the tribe of Judah (Hebrews 7:14), could not serve as an earthly priest.

The verse explains why Jesus’ priestly ministry must be in heaven, not on earth. Hebrews 8:1-2 states that Jesus is a high priest who sat down at the right hand of the throne of the Majesty in heaven, a minister of the sanctuary and true tabernacle set up by the Lord, not man. Hebrews 8:3 notes that every high priest is appointed to offer gifts and sacrifices, so Jesus also had something to offer—Himself.

This verse guards against a misunderstanding: some argued Christ was not a priest because He did not offer sacrifice on earth. But the author clarifies that Christ’s coming in human nature was in the character of a priest, and His death was His sacrifice, which occurred on earth. He offered one sacrifice and then went to heaven. The earthly priests offered gifts according to the law, but Jesus’ sacrifice was once for all.

Hebrews 8:5 explains that earthly priests serve at a copy and shadow of heavenly things, as Moses was warned to make the tabernacle according to the pattern shown him on the mountain. Hebrews 8:6 concludes that Jesus has obtained a more excellent ministry, as He is the mediator of a better covenant established on better promises.

The Old Covenant’s repeated sacrifices highlighted their insufficiency. Jesus, as the perfect high priest, offered Himself as the ultimate sacrifice for sin, once for all, bringing a new and better covenant (Hebrews 7:27; 9:11-14).

Hebrews 8:4 highlights the superiority of Jesus’ priesthood over the Levitical system. Jesus, as the Son of God and Messiah, brings a new and better covenant, offering a perfect sacrifice and fulfilling the high priest’s role eternally.
