1 John 2:5
But whoso keepeth his word, in him verily is the love of God perfected: hereby know we that we are in him.
1 John 2:5 (KJV)
Context
The apostle John wrote this first letter to encourage believers and to address challenges facing the early Christian community. In this verse, he stresses the vital connection between obeying God’s Word and the perfection of God’s love within the believer. The immediate context strengthens this point: verse 4 warns that anyone who claims to know God while disobeying His commandments is a liar. Verse 5 presents the positive counterpart to that warning.
Meaning
John begins with the phrase “whoso keepeth his word,” referring to those who faithfully obey and abide by God’s commandments and teachings. Keeping God’s Word is more than intellectual assent; it demands a lifestyle of obedience, living according to the principles revealed in Scripture.
The apostle continues that in those who keep God’s Word, “the love of God [is] perfected.” The Greek word translated “perfected” (τετελείωται) means brought to its intended goal or completion, not merely improved. This perfection is not a claim to sinless moral perfection, but rather the love of God reaching its full purpose in the believer’s life. The phrase “love of God” can refer either to God’s love for us, which is brought to its intended end in our lives, or to our love for God, which is brought to maturity. Both interpretations are grammatically possible, and John’s broader teaching supports both.
John concludes, “hereby know we that we are in him,” indicating that the obedience which perfects God’s love also provides assurance that we truly abide in Christ. This is a practical, verifiable assurance based on obedience, not a mere feeling or claim. Our obedience serves as evidence of our connection to Him and confirms our membership in His family.
Application
This passage urges believers to actively live out their faith by obeying God’s Word and allowing His love to work in and through them. It reminds us that love for God is not merely a feeling but is demonstrated through concrete actions and obedience to His commands. By doing so, we experience the fullness of God’s love and gain confident assurance of our relationship with Him.
