Revelation 5:2
And I saw a strong angel proclaiming with a loud voice, Who is worthy to open the book, and to loose the seals thereof?
Revelation 5:2 (KJV)
Context
Revelation 5:2 belongs to the vision the Apostle John received while exiled on the island of Patmos. In this heavenly scene, God the Father sits on His throne, holding in His right hand a scroll written on both sides and sealed with seven seals. The scroll represents God’s divine plan for the future, and opening its seals will unfold that plan.
John then sees a strong angel proclaiming with a loud voice, asking the entire heavenly realm: “Who is worthy to open the book, and to loose the seals thereof?” The angel’s strength and the loudness of the voice emphasize the importance and gravity of the question. This angel is a created being, not Jesus Christ, for Christ appears later in the chapter as the Lion of the tribe of Judah and the slain Lamb.
Meaning
The Greek word translated “worthy” is axios, which carries the sense of authority, virtue, and moral fitness. The question is not merely about ability but about worthiness—who has the right and the character to open the scroll and loose its seals. The seals are obstacles that prevent the contents from being revealed, and only one who is truly worthy can remove them.
The proclamation sets up a dramatic tension resolved in the following verses. John observes that no one in heaven, on earth, or under the earth is found worthy, and he weeps bitterly because it seems no one can fulfill this role. Then one of the twenty-four elders assures him that the Lion of the tribe of Judah, the Root of David, has triumphed and is worthy to open the scroll and its seven seals (Revelation 5:5-7). This Lion is a symbolic reference to Jesus Christ, who is later described as the “Lamb that was slain” (Revelation 5:12).
Biblical connections
The title “Lion of the tribe of Judah” recalls Genesis 49:9-10, where Judah is likened to a lion and promised the scepter. “Root of David” points to Isaiah 11:1 and the Messianic prophecy of a branch from Jesse’s line. These titles identify Jesus as the promised King and the one who fulfills God’s covenant promises.
Application
Revelation 5:2 highlights the uniqueness and supremacy of Jesus Christ as the central figure in God’s redemptive plan. Through His sacrificial death and resurrection, He has overcome sin and death, and therefore He alone has the authority and worthiness to execute God’s divine purposes. This truth calls believers to trust Christ’s sovereign control over history and to find assurance that God’s plan will be accomplished.
Reflection
The search for a worthy one ends at the cross and the empty tomb. Jesus, the Lion and the Lamb, is the only one who can unlock the mysteries of God’s unfolding plan and bring about the ultimate consummation of His kingdom. This verse invites readers to worship the One who is worthy and to rest in the certainty that He holds the future.
