Revelation 19:16

Posted on 18 May at 14:19
Listen to this article

“And he hath on his vesture and on his thigh a name written, KING OF KINGS, AND LORD OF LORDS.”

Context of Revelation 19:16: Revelation is the last book of the Bible and is known for its apocalyptic imagery and symbolic language. In this chapter, we find the description of the triumphal return of Jesus Christ, known as the second coming. The verses leading up to Revelation 19:16 depict the glorious scene of Jesus Christ coming in power and glory to judge the nations and establish His kingdom.

Symbolism in the verse:

  • Vesture:The vesture refers to the clothing or robe worn by Jesus. In this context, it represents His royalty, authority, and victory. The fact that His vesture bears a name emphasizes His identity and role.
  • Thigh:The mention of the thigh is significant because in ancient times, a name or title was often inscribed on the thigh of a conquering king or ruler. This symbolizes Jesus’ authority and power as the King of kings and Lord of lords.

King of Kings and Lord of Lords:This phrase is a powerful declaration of Jesus Christ’s supremacy and sovereignty over all earthly rulers and authorities. It emphasizes His divine authority and dominion over all creation. Jesus is not merely one king among many; He is the King above all kings and the Lord above all lords.

Implications and lessons:

  • Ultimate authority:Revelation 19:16 reminds us that no earthly power or ruler can compare to Jesus Christ. He is the ultimate authority and holds all power in heaven and on earth.
  • Final victory:This verse points to the ultimate triumph of Jesus over all evil and His final victory in establishing His kingdom. It assures believers that no matter how bleak the circumstances may seem, the ultimate victory belongs to Christ and His followers.
  • Worship and allegiance:As the King of kings and Lord of lords, Jesus deserves our worship, loyalty, and submission. This verse calls us to recognize His authority and to align our lives with His will.

Application:

Remember, the book of Revelation is known for its rich prophetic insight and should be approached with prayerful reverence, allowing its truths to transform our lives.
