O give thanks to the Lord of lords: for his mercy endureth for ever.

Psalm 136 is a psalm of thanksgiving and praise, often called the “Great Hallel” because of its repeated refrain, “His mercy endureth forever.” The psalm recalls God’s steadfast love and faithfulness throughout Israel’s history, especially the deliverance of the Israelites from Egyptian slavery. The title “Lord of lords” recognizes God’s absolute sovereignty. He is higher than every earthly king, ruler, or authority. No power exists above Him, and He governs all creation. The same title appears in Deuteronomy 10:17, where God is called “God of gods, and Lord of lords.” In the New Testament, Revelation 19:16 applies this title to Jesus Christ, who is “King of kings, and Lord of lords.” This connection shows that the God who delivered Israel is the same Lord who rules through Christ, and His mercy is revealed fully in Him. The title also points to Christ’s authority over all earthly rulers, as He is the ruler over the kings of the earth (Revelation 1:5). This truth is further supported by Proverbs 8:15-16, which teaches that kings reign through wisdom, and Psalm 89:27, where God declares His chosen one will be made the highest of the kings of the earth.
