Revelation 19:16
And he hath on his vesture and on his thigh a name written, KING OF KINGS, AND LORD OF LORDS.
Revelation 19:16 (KJV)
Context
Revelation is the last book of the Bible, known for its apocalyptic imagery and symbolic language. In this chapter, the apostle John describes the triumphal return of Jesus Christ at His second coming. The verses leading up to Revelation 19:16 depict Christ coming in power and glory to judge the nations and establish His kingdom.
Meaning
The vesture is the robe worn by Jesus, representing His royalty, authority, and victory. The name written on His vesture and on His thigh publicly displays His identity and role. In ancient times, a conqueror’s name was often inscribed on his garment or thigh, symbolizing honor and authority. The title “King of kings and Lord of lords” is a superlative Hebrew idiom meaning the supreme ruler over all other rulers. It declares that Jesus is not merely one king among many; He is the King above all kings and the Lord above all lords.
Biblical connections
This title echoes Old Testament descriptions of God’s supreme kingship, such as Deuteronomy 10:17 and Psalm 136:3, and is also affirmed in 1 Timothy 6:15. These connections affirm the deity of Christ and His absolute sovereignty over all earthly powers.
Application
Revelation 19:16 reminds us that no earthly power or ruler can compare to Jesus Christ. He is the ultimate authority, holding all power in heaven and on earth. This verse points to the final victory of Jesus over all evil and assures believers that, no matter how bleak circumstances may seem, the ultimate victory belongs to Christ and His followers. As King of kings and Lord of lords, Jesus deserves our worship, loyalty, and submission. This verse calls us to recognize His authority and align our lives with His will.
Reflection
The book of Revelation is rich in prophetic insight and should be approached with prayerful reverence, allowing its truths to transform our lives.
