Revelation 1:5
And from Jesus Christ, who is the faithful witness, and the first begotten of the dead, and the prince of the kings of the earth. Unto him that loved us, and washed us from our sins in his own blood,
Revelation 1:5 (KJV)
Context
Revelation 1:5 stands in the opening greeting of the Book of Revelation, which the Apostle John wrote to the seven churches in Asia. The verse introduces Jesus Christ as the source of the book’s message and then presents three titles that summarize His person and work.
Meaning
Jesus is called the “faithful witness.” This title points to His complete trustworthiness. In His earthly ministry, He spoke the truth of God without compromise, taught the kingdom of heaven, and showed love and compassion. Because He is the faithful witness, believers can rely on His words as the true revelation of God’s will.
The title “first begotten of the dead” refers to His resurrection. Jesus was the first to rise from the dead never to die again, and His resurrection guarantees eternal life for all who belong to Him. Through His death and resurrection, He conquered sin and death, opening the way for believers to share in His victory.
The title “prince of the kings of the earth” declares His sovereignty. Jesus rules over all earthly rulers and kingdoms. His authority extends over both the spiritual and earthly realms, and His reign will be fully revealed when He returns in glory.
The verse then turns to what Christ has done for believers: “Unto him that loved us, and washed us from our sins in his own blood.” His love is shown in His willing sacrifice on the cross. His blood cleanses us from sin and is the basis of our forgiveness and salvation.
Biblical connections
The title “first begotten of the dead” connects to the Old Testament hope of resurrection and preeminence, a theme reflected in Psalm 89:27. The “prince of the kings of the earth” fulfills the promise of a sovereign King who will reign over all nations.
Application
Because Jesus is the faithful witness, we can trust His promises even when circumstances are uncertain. Because He is the first begotten of the dead, we have hope that death is not the end. Because He is the prince of the kings of the earth, we can live with confidence that no earthly power is outside His control. And because He loved us and washed us from our sins, we are called to respond with gratitude and to live as people cleansed by His blood.
Reflection
Revelation 1:5 presents a complete picture of Jesus: faithful in His witness, victorious over death, sovereign over all rulers, and loving enough to die for our sins. These truths invite us to rest in His authority and to rejoice in the salvation He has secured.
