Revelation 1:3
“Blessed is he that readeth, and they that hear the words of this prophecy, and keep those things which are written therein: for the time is at hand.”
Revelation: also known as the Book of Revelation or the Apocalypse, is the final book of the New Testament. It is a highly symbolic and prophetic book written by the apostle John while he was exiled on the island of Patmos. The book contains a series of visions and messages given to John by Jesus Christ, revealing the culmination of God’s plan for the world and the events leading up to the end times.
In Revelation 1:3, there are three key elements mentioned that bring a blessing to those who engage with them:
Reading:The passage begins by stating, “Blessed is he that readeth.” This emphasizes the importance of reading and studying the book of Revelation. It encourages individuals to actively engage with the text and seek understanding. Reading the Word of God is essential for spiritual growth and knowledge, and in the case of Revelation, it provides insight into God’s plan for the future.
Hearing:The verse continues, “and they that hear the words of this prophecy.” It’s not enough to simply read the words; we must also listen to their meaning and allow them to impact our lives. Hearing implies attentive listening, openness, and receptiveness to God’s message. This emphasizes the need for spiritual discernment and understanding as we study the book of Revelation.
Keeping:The passage concludes with the statement, “and keep those things which are written therein.” This suggests that the words of Revelation are not meant to be merely intellectual knowledge but should also be applied practically in our lives. Keeping the things written in Revelation refers to obeying God’s commands, aligning our lives with His will, and living in accordance with His Word. It involves personal transformation, moral integrity, and faithful obedience to God’s teachings.
The verse concludes with the phrase, “for the time is at hand.” This serves as a reminder of the imminent nature of the events described in Revelation. It underscores the urgency of understanding and applying the teachings of Revelation, as the prophecies contained within the book pertain to both the near future and the final consummation of God’s purposes.
Overall, Revelation 1:3 encourages believers to actively engage with the book, read and study its contents, listen attentively to its message, and apply its teachings in their daily lives. It promises a blessing to those who seek to understand and follow God’s revealed plan for the future.
