1 Samuel Chapter 25

Summery

1 Samuel 25 tells the story of Nabal, a wealthy man who refused to show kindness to David and his men. David, who was on the run from King Saul at the time, had protected Nabal’s shepherds and flocks in the wilderness. When David’s men approached Nabal and requested provisions, Nabal responded rudely and refused to help.

Upon hearing this, David became angry and planned to attack Nabal and his household. However, Abigail, Nabal’s wise and beautiful wife, learned about the situation and quickly took action. She gathered a generous gift of food and went to meet David, falling at his feet and pleading for forgiveness. Abigail praised David’s integrity and reminded him that God would bless him in the future.

David, moved by Abigail’s words and wisdom, recognized the righteousness of her actions and the potential consequences of his planned revenge. He thanked Abigail for her intervention and declared that he would spare Nabal and his household. Abigail returned home and found Nabal feasting and drunk, so she wisely decided not to tell him what had happened until morning.

The next day, when Abigail informed Nabal about what had occurred, he was struck with fear and his heart failed him. About ten days later, Nabal died, and when David heard the news, he sent for Abigail to become his wife.
