Daniel 10:18
Then there came againe and touched me one like the appearance of a man, and he strengthned me, Daniel 10:18 (KJV)
Historical Context: The book of Daniel is set during the Babylonian exile when the Israelites were taken captive by King Nebuchadnezzar of Babylon. Daniel, one of the exiles, served in the Babylonian and subsequent Persian empires. Daniel 10 provides a glimpse into Daniel’s experiences and visions during the third year of Cyrus, the king of Persia.
Supernatural Encounters: In Daniel 10, the prophet Daniel had a vision of a great man while standing by the Tigris River. The vision caused Daniel to become weak and fearful. He described this celestial being as a man clothed in linen, with a face shining like lightning, eyes like flaming torches, arms and feet like polished bronze, and a voice like a multitude.
The Intervention of Michael: In Daniel’s weakened state, he heard a voice speaking, which caused him to fall into a deep sleep with his face to the ground. Then a hand touched him and lifted him to his hands and knees. The angelic being identified himself as a messenger from God and explained that he had been delayed in his response because of a conflict with the “princes of Persia.” Michael, one of the chief princes, came to help Daniel, and Daniel remained there with the princes of Persia.
Michael, the Archangel: Michael is an archangel and a prominent figure in both the Old and New Testaments. In the book of Daniel, Michael is described as a protector of God’s people (Daniel 12:1). In the New Testament he is mentioned in the context of spiritual warfare (Jude 1:9) and the battle against Satan (Revelation 12:7).
Spiritual Warfare: The mention of Michael’s intervention against the princes of Persia reveals a spiritual battle occurring behind the scenes. It indicates that unseen forces are at work in the spiritual realm, influencing the events of the earthly realm. The princes of Persia may refer to powerful spiritual entities or demonic forces influencing the rulers of Persia.
God’s Sovereignty: The delay in the angel’s arrival highlights the complexity of the spiritual realm and the resistance encountered in carrying out God’s purposes. Yet Michael’s intervention assures Daniel that God’s plans and protection prevail despite spiritual opposition. This underscores God’s sovereignty over earthly kingdoms and the ultimate victory of His purposes.
Application: Daniel 10:18 reminds believers of the reality of spiritual warfare and the assurance of God’s protection. Christians are encouraged to be vigilant and to put on the armor of God (Ephesians 6:10‑18) as they face spiritual opposition. Just as Michael came to help Daniel, God’s angels are dispatched to aid and protect believers (Hebrews 1:14). This verse teaches us to trust in God’s power, knowing that He is in control even in the midst of spiritual battles.
By studying Daniel 10:18, we gain insight into the supernatural realm, the role of angelic beings like Michael, and the assurance of God’s sovereignty and protection in the face of spiritual warfare.
