Then said these men, We shall not find any occasion against this Daniel, except we find it against him concerning the law of his God.

Context

The book of Daniel is set during the Babylonian captivity, when the Jewish people were exiled to Babylon. Daniel served as one of the administrators in the kingdom of Darius the Mede. In Daniel 6:4, Daniel distinguished himself among the administrators and the satraps by his excellent spirit, which aroused jealousy among the other high officials. They sought to find fault with him but could not, because of his integrity and faithfulness.

In this verse, the conspiring officials acknowledge Daniel’s faithfulness to his God, recognizing it as the only potential avenue to bring charges against him. Their words, “We shall not find any occasion against this Daniel, except we find it against him concerning the law of his God,” reveal both their envy and their grudging respect for his character. The phrase “this Daniel” carries a tone of disdain, yet it inadvertently testifies to his unwavering devotion. Reflection

Daniel’s enemies could find no fault in him except his devotion to God. That same devotion, which made him a target, also made him blameless before both God and man. His life challenges us to examine our own integrity: if our critics could find no legitimate accusation against us, would their only complaint be our commitment to God? May we so live that any opposition we face arises not from our failures, but from our faithfulness.
