Daniel 6:6
Then these presidents and princes assembled together to the king, and said thus unto him, King Darius, live for ever.
Daniel 6:6 (KJV)
Context
Daniel 6 is set during the Babylonian captivity, when the Israelites were exiled from their land. In this chapter, Daniel serves under King Darius the Mede, having risen to a position of great influence in the kingdom. His success and integrity provoked jealousy among other high-ranking officials, who sought to trap him and remove him from his position.
Meaning
In verse 6, these presidents and princes assembled together and approached the king, addressing him with the customary honorific, “King Darius, live for ever.” The Hebrew word translated “assembled” (reges) properly signifies to join and associate with, indicating a conspiracy; they came by agreement, having consulted and formed a scheme among themselves. The word also suggests assembling in a tumultuous and noisy way, implying they thought by their number and noise to carry their point. They had drawn up a bill or decree in form, ready to be signed by the king, whom they hoped to persuade. Their greeting was flattery, not sincere reverence; their intention was to entrap Daniel, who had distinguished himself in faithful service to the king.
Biblical connections
This verse sets the stage for the idolatrous decree they propose in the following verse, showing how flattering speech can mask malicious intent. The chapter overview confirms that in Daniel 6, Daniel is made chief of the presidents, they conspire against him, obtain an idolatrous decree, Daniel is cast into the lion’s den, is saved, and his adversaries are devoured.
Application
As believers, we can draw inspiration from Daniel’s example. In our own lives, we may encounter situations where our faith is tested or where we face opposition because of our convictions. Daniel’s faithfulness teaches us the importance of staying true to our beliefs and trusting in God’s faithfulness, even when the circumstances seem challenging. We are called to remain steadfast in our devotion to God, seeking His guidance and strength, and relying on His promises.
Reflection
This verse highlights the contrast between the scheming officials and Daniel’s character. While the officials were driven by envy and deceit, Daniel stood firm in his faith and dedication to God. The passage underscores the importance of integrity and loyalty to God, even in the face of opposition and potentially dire consequences. Daniel’s unwavering trust in God led him to remain faithful, even when confronted with the threat of death.
